Client Challenge: Heavy Lifting in a Low-Clearance Workshop

A leading Russian machinery manufacturing plant needed to move bulky metal components efficiently inside a low-profile workshop. High-volume production requires frequent lifting of heavy loads on the assembly line, but the plant's limited headroom makes their daily production even more stressful. The client's goal was to maximize usable lift height and streamline workflow while ensuring operator safety. In this case, their plant needed an indoor under-running crane solution that would raise heavy parts up to 6 meters high (maximizing hook height) on an 8-meter span, and operate reliably under medium-duty (A3/A4) cycles with remote control.

Key customer requirements included:

  • Maximize headroom: Install on the ceiling rails to free up floor space and avoid structural supports.
  • 3-ton lift capacity: Handle moderate loads typical of machine assembly.
  • 8m span & 6m lift: Bridge a long bay while lifting parts above high fixtures.
  • Remote control operation: Ensure operator safety and convenience during frequent lifts.
  • Medium-duty rating: Suitable for continuous daily use (about A4/M4 class) in a workshop.
  • High quality & compliance: Meet Russian export standards (CE, ISO certification) and perform proof tests.

Lifting Solution: Custom 3T LX Under-Running Crane

To meet these needs, we provided a custom single-girder under-running crane with a 3-ton NR wire rope hoist. This suspension crane runs on rails attached to the roof structure, saving floor space and maximizing headroom. The LX design was chosen for its sturdy, high-strength construction and space-saving profile. It is built from heavy-gauge, welded steel to ensure rigidity, and uses optimized end-beam geometry to distribute loads evenly. The end beams are tailored to match the building walls, allowing the trolley to lift materials right up to wall lines if needed. The the main beam of this underhung crane is suspended below the track, eliminating the need for any support columns. This design effectively addresses the low-ceiling constraint.

1. Crane Model and Configuration

  • Crane Type: Single-girder, under-running (underground/suspension) bridge crane (LX series).
  • Rated Capacity: 3 metric tons (with 5t and 10t options available in this series).
  • Span: 8.0 meters (custom length within the 3–16m range).
  • Lifting Height: 6.0 meters (can be configured 6–30m per standard LX parameters).
  • Working Class: A4 (ISO) / M4 (FEM) – medium-duty factory service.
  • Hoist: 3T NR series electric wire rope hoist (heavy-duty, FEM M5–M7 rated).
  • Hoist Lifting Speeds: 5.0 m/min (high) and 0.8 m/min (low), dual-speed for both precision and fast cycle.
  • Trolley and Crane Speeds: Up to 20–30 m/min traverse (standard), VFD speeds optional for smooth control.
  • Power Supply: 3-phase 380V/50Hz, with conductor bars on the runway.
  • Control Mode: Wireless remote control (enabling the operator to stand at a safe distance), with emergency stop and overload protection.

This configuration is a complete lifting system. We matched the LX under-running frame with a Weihua NR series hoist for optimal performance. The NR hoist is engineered for 3–80 ton applications, with capacities 3–5 ton featuring a fully enclosed drum design. It meets FEM standards (class M5–M7) for rigorous use, ensuring reliability under heavy manufacturing cycles. The combined system enables precise material handling at the plant's production stations while fitting into the confined space.

2. Customized Design

To tailor the crane exactly to the client's workflow, we customized this crane for the customer's application.

  • Low-Headroom Design: The NR type wire rope hoists we have selected maximize the use of headroom in the facility. This wire rope hoist has a short distance from the hook cylinder to the reel, a design that is of great advantage in low headroom plants.
  • Optimized Girder Geometry: We used the LX series' rigid box-section end beams with tailored ends. These extra-long end sections allow the trolley to reach further, making it possible to handle parts close to the walls. This effectively expands the usable workspace inside the gantry bay.
  • High-Strength Materials: The main girder is built of high-grade 32C steel (high-tensile alloy). This provides maximum strength for minimum weight, resulting in a compact structure and light weight that still meets the load requirements. A lighter crane frame reduces stress on the runway rails and supports, and lowers power consumption during traverse.
  • Electric Controls: We equipped the crane with state-of-the-art AC frequency drives for the hoist and trolley motors. This allows smooth starting, precise speed regulation, and advanced functions like gentle start/stop and optional anti-sway control. A digital multi-speed motor (dual-speed) on the hoist gives both fast and fine lifting rates, improving cycle time and accuracy.
  • Remote Wireless Control: For safety and convenience, the operator uses a pendant-style wireless controller (PLd-safety rated). This allows the operator to stand back from the load and enjoy clear visibility from any angle, reducing injury risk from dropped loads. In short, remote control overhead crane systems enhance both productivity and safety in modern workshops.

In summary, our customized solution is an LX-series under-running crane built for the customer's needs. It uses a single girder and is fully rail-mounted on the ceiling (no columns needed), providing a safe, reliable, and space-efficient lifting solution. The system is optimized for the plant's 8m-wide bay and limited roof height, delivering the required 6m hook travel and 3t capacity without compromise.

Installation & Quality Assurance

During implementation, our project team coordinated closely with the customer's engineers. The cranes were shipped in knocked-down kits to the site. On arrival, our certified technicians oversaw assembly and alignment of the runway rails and bridged connections. Despite winter conditions (typical in Russia), the installation was completed smoothly.

1. Proof Load Testing and Safety Verification

To ensure safety and reliability, we performed exhaustive proof load tests before handover. In line with ASME/OSHA guidelines, each crane was tested with 125% of rated load. This dynamic load test (lifting and traversing the overload) verifies the structural integrity and proper operation of all functions. Test reports were documented and delivered to the customer. In practice, proof-testing under heavier weight than the rated 3t ensures confidence that the crane will perform safely under all normal loads.

2. Pre-Commissioning Inspection

Our quality process also included pre-operational inspections: we checked that all parts (hoist, trolley, control switches, limit devices) were correct and undamaged. After testing, we conducted a detailed periodic inspection (examining bolts, welds, wheels, electricals) before commissioning. These steps conform to industry standards like ASME B30.2 and Russian GOST regulations for cranes.

3. Operator Training

Finally, we trained the plant's operators on safe crane use. We highlighted features of the remote control (e.g. emergency stop), proper pre-start inspection routines, and explained the duty limits.

Advantages of the Provided Crane

This 3T under-running single girder overhead crane was designed to match the real working conditions of the Russian manufacturing plant. It is not only about lifting capacity. It is about how efficiently you can use your space, how smoothly you can handle materials, and how safely your team can operate every day. If you are planning to install a crane in a limited indoor space, this type of solution gives you flexibility, stability, and long-term reliability without increasing your building costs.

1. Space Savings

Because the crane is suspended from the roof structure, it does not require additional floor columns or support frames. This means you can keep your production lines, storage areas, and walking paths exactly as they are. Nothing blocks forklifts or workers. Material flow stays smooth. If your workshop has limited floor space, this design helps you make full use of every square meter. You can expand your operations without expanding your building.

2. Higher Hook Clearance

The crane is equipped with an NR wire rope electric hoist, which allows the hook to reach a higher lifting position at the same building height. Wire rope hoists naturally provide better headroom than chain hoists in many installations. In practical terms, you can gain around 10–20% more lifting height. In low-roof factories, this extra height makes a big difference. You can stack materials higher or handle taller equipment without modifying the building.

3. Lightweight, Compact Structure

The single-girder design uses high-strength steel to keep the crane light but strong. A lighter crane reduces the load on the runway beams and building structure. This lowers installation costs and long-term structural stress. It also reduces energy consumption during travel. You get efficient lifting performance without unnecessary weight. The compact structure makes the crane easier to install and maintain while still ensuring safe and stable operation.

4. Smooth Operation

The crane uses a balanced drive system with precision motors to ensure steady movement. Starts and stops are smooth. This reduces load swing and improves positioning accuracy. When handling molds, machine parts, or sensitive components, smooth travel protects both the load and your equipment. If your application requires higher precision, anti-sway systems or positioning controls can be added.

5. Wireless Remote Control

The wireless remote control system allows the operator to move freely around the load. You are not restricted to one fixed control position. This improves visibility and reduces blind spots. The operator can choose the safest and clearest angle during lifting. It also reduces physical strain compared to traditional pendant control. Faster response and better visibility mean higher productivity and safer daily operations.

6. Durable, Service-Friendly Hoist

The NR wire rope hoist is built for long service life, with a working class of FEM M5–M7. It supports frequent lifting tasks in industrial environments. The dual-speed design allows precise positioning during final placement. Its fully enclosed structure protects internal components from dust and debris. With a 60% duty cycle, it can handle demanding workloads. Maintenance is straightforward. Motors, brakes, and wire ropes are easy to access, and spare parts are readily available. This reduces downtime and keeps your production running smoothly.

Other Applications of Under-Running Single Girder Overhead Crane

The LX downstream bridge cranes we supply to Russian machine shops are not used only in production lines. This design works well in many indoor environments where you need reliable lifting but do not want to take up valuable floor space. If your facility has limited headroom or a compact layout, an under-running bridge crane can be a right solution.

1. Workshop & Maintenance

In heavy vehicle, or industrial equipment maintenance shops, space and accessibility matter a lot. Technicians often need to remove engines, gearboxes, or other heavy assemblies quickly and safely. A under-running bridge crane allows you to lift components directly above the work area without blocking pathways or equipment on the ground. Because the crane runs beneath the runway beam, it keeps the structure compact and leaves more vertical space available. With remote control operation, you can position loads accurately while maintaining a safe distance. This improves safety and reduces downtime during repairs.

2. Warehouse Logistics

In warehouses with limited aisle space, suspension overhead cranes can help you move pallets, machine parts or heavy packages without taking up floor space like a forklift. This improves traffic flow and reduces the risk of collisions. If your warehouse handles medium-weight goods and requires frequent loading and unloading from trucks or conveyors, a under-running overhead crane can increase efficiency.

3. Food Processing and Chemical Plants

In food processing and certain chemical production areas, cleanliness and controlled handling are essential. A remote-controlled under-running crane reduces direct human contact with heavy containers, tanks, or machine parts. This supports safer and more hygienic operations in non-explosive environments with A3 or A4 duty requirements. The smooth lifting action of a wire rope hoist helps you handle loads gently, which is important when dealing with sensitive equipment or sealed containers. If your plant requires reliable indoor lifting with consistent performance, this crane type can meet those needs without overcomplicating your setup.

4. Subcontract Machine Shops

Many metal fabrication and subcontract machine shops need reliable lifting for milling machines, molds, steel components, or assembly fixtures. If you currently rely on multiple jib cranes with limited coverage, upgrading to an overhead crane can significantly expand your working range. The longer span and full-length travel allow you to serve several workstations with one system. This improves workflow and reduces manual handling.

FAQs

Q: What industries can use under-running overhead cranes?
A: Many indoor material-handling contexts. It's common in machinery plants (lifting engines, parts), auto assembly lines, warehouse logistics, maintenance shops, and light fabrication. Basically any setting where frequent lifting of small-to-medium loads (1–10t) is needed under low overheads.

Q: How does remote control improve crane operation?
A: A wireless remote allows the operator to control the crane from a safe vantage point, out of harm's way. This reduces the risk of accidents from falling loads. It also gives better load visibility, so the operator can align lifts more precisely.

Q: What maintenance does this crane need?
A: Routine inspection of the hook, wire rope, and brakes is key. The OEM recommends periodic lubrication of moving parts and checking alignment of the runway. Every 4 years (or sooner with heavy use) a full load test and detailed inspection (per ASME/CMAA guidelines) should be done. Our service team provides spare parts (wire rope, etc.) and can schedule maintenance to ensure decades of trouble-free use.

Q: Can this crane be used in harsh environments?
A: The supplied model is for general indoor use (factory, A3/A4 conditions). For corrosive or explosive atmospheres, we offer variants with special coatings, explosion-proof motors, or stainless components. Similarly, if higher duty (A5/A6) or cold-temperature operation is needed, we can upgrade the components. The modular design makes it adaptable: e.g. radio control for remote areas, heated cabinets, or higher IP-rated electrics.
