3-Ton Pillar Jib Crane Installation in Australia
Discover how Yuantaicrane's 3-ton pillar jib crane improved safety and efficiency for an Australian manufacturing client. Explore our heavy-duty lifting solutions today!
The customer is a precision heavy machinery component manufacturer in Australia. They manufacture massive bearings, cast housings, and structural frames for mining and construction equipment. In this industry, efficient material handling is critical to maintaining production flow. Any delay in transporting multi-ton items between CNC machining machines, assembly benches, and storage racks can slow down the entire process.
Customer Requirements
Based on our communication with the customer, we understood the need for a compact, fast and reliable lifting solution. Considering that the crane is mainly used for lifting within a fixed area, we have designed a pillar-mounted jib crane that allows for frequent lifting operations. The crane’s slim column keep it inside a tight workshop footprint while still providing the required 6-meter reach from column to jib tip. A full 360° slewing range lets operators service machining cells, inspection benches, and storage zones without moving heavy parts by hand. To reduce downtime we used modular, pre-assembled sections and simple bolted connections so on-site installation is fast, and we specified sealed bearings, easy-access lubrication points, and robust limit switches for low, predictable maintenance.
Challenges Before Yuantai's Solution
According to the customer, there were already many problems in their factory, which not only slowed down their work progress but also increased safety risks. Since their factory was built many years ago, many work areas were added with subsequent planning, and the layout is not conducive to efficient movement. These problems will lead to a decrease in their production efficiency and a decrease in output.
1. Inadequate Lifting Equipment
Some work areas of the plant rely on gantry cranes and hand hoists to perform heavy-duty tasks. Each lift requires two to three people to install and stabilize the load. Heavy components can swing and strike nearby items, which not only leaves scratches and dents on the components but also creates safety risks for workers. And because some of the equipment is relatively old, it is impossible to lift all items.
2. Limited Workspace
The workshop had narrow aisles and low ceilings. Overhead cranes could not reach many work cells. Forklifts could not access mezzanines or tight machining areas. Operators had to move parts long distances by hand or with improvised rigging. That created bottlenecks and extra handling steps. It also increased the chance of collisions and dropped loads in confined spots. The plant needed a compact, flexible lifting solution that could work close to the process and fit the existing layout.
3. High Maintenance and Downtime
Existing equipment cannot withstand frequent lifting tasks, and some of the lifting equipment requires frequent lubrication and even replacement of parts. Once the equipment is down, it is often down for hours to make repairs, disrupting their production schedule. This combination made uptime unpredictable and production planning difficult.
Yuantai's Customized Jib Crane Design

To meet the needs of a coastal workshop with limited headroom, Yuantai designed a 3-ton pillar-mounted jib crane. The following features ensure reliable lifting, smooth rotation, and long service life in a humid environment.
1. Column and Base
The crane's column stands 4 m tall to match the workshop's ceiling height, giving full hook reach without intruding on overhead piping. It bolts to the floor via a 500×500×20 mm base plate anchored with four M24 studs. All steel surfaces receive a hot-dip galvanizing treatment. This finish protects against corrosion in coastal humidity and eases long-term maintenance.
2. Jib Arm and Rotation
Extending 6 m from the column's center, the jib arm uses a 200×200×8 mm welded box section. This profile resists bending under a 3 t load and keeps deflection below service limits. A 360° slewing ring bearing fitted with sealed rollers permits continuous rotation. The slow slewing speed of 0.5 r/min gives operators fine control when positioning loads, preventing sudden swings in tight work cells.
3. Hoist and Trolley
A dual-speed electric chain hoist handles the lifting. Slow-speed mode moves at 2.5 m/min for accurate placement. When clearing the area is a priority, choose the fast-speed mode, which travels at 6 metres per minute. The standard lift height is 5 metres of chain, with excess chain retained on a guide reel for future re-rigging. The trolley moves at 12 m/min on sealed-bearing end carriages, with an alternative 17 m/min arrangement for faster traverse. The controls comprise an IP65-rated pendant station and an optional wireless remote. This configuration keeps operators out of hazard zones while keeping complete control over lifting motions.

4. Safety and Quality Features
To ensure reliable operation, the crane incorporates multiple safety and quality features: an overload limiter prevents the hoist from lifting beyond 110% of its rated capacity; upper and lower limit switches prevent the hoist from over-travel; a spring-applied, electromagnetically released emergency brake secures the load if power is lost; and all components are manufactured under a DIN ISO 9000/EN 29001 quality management system.
Implementation and Installation
Yuantai's modular architecture allowed us to move from delivery to operation in record time. First, we installed and leveled the heavy base plates, which were then secured with high-strength foot bolts torqued to specification. Next, we hoisted and positioned each steel column using laser plumb lines before securing the gusset plates and cross-bracing. Finally, we bolted on the moving arms, slid the lifting trolleys into their tracks, connected power and controls, and performed no-load travel tests to ensure seamless functioning. By dividing installation into three concentrated stages—base plate preparation, column construction, and arm-trolley assembly—we were able to install the cranes in only days.

Performance in Diverse Tasks
The new jib crane increased daily operations across numerous job areas by combining precision movement with substantial lifting capacity. In the machining cell, it lifted 2.5-ton bearing housings off the CNC lathe and swung each load over a full 360° arc, sending items directly to the inspection bench without shifting workstations. The crane placed 3-ton structural frames on welding jigs at the assembly bench, using its dual-speed hoist to reduce jolts by switching from quick lift to slow-speed precise positioning. In the warehouse, it transported pre-assembled subunits up to the mezzanine floor via a 12 m lane, where a 17 m/min trolley-travel rate reduced transfer times. Outdoors, the crane ran on a temporary U-shaped track to lift pump assembly for repair, with its hot-dip galvanized coating shielding against coastal air and assuring reliable service in humid environments.
Advantages of Yuantai's Jib Crane Solution
Yuantai provides luffing jib cranes with a small footprint and robust components. You can achieve safer, more efficient material handling without extensive remodeling of your existing building.
1. Space-Saving Design
The stand-up jib crane and compact base allow it to fit into tight corners, so you can store other equipment in place. Compared to bridge cranes, they are simple and small and therefore require only minor modifications to be put into operation.
2. Flexible Coverage
A full 360° slewing radius lets a single crane serve every station around the column. You do not need extra cranes or constant forklift shuttles to move parts. The boom length and trolley travel can be matched to your work area so one crane covers multiple tasks. Operators can position loads precisely, which speeds repetitive work and reduces manual handling risks.
3. Low Maintenance and High Uptime
The crane uses sealed roller bearings and corrosion-resistant steel to limit wear and corrosion. Routine checks—like chain lubrication and brake inspection—are straightforward and quick to do. Components are easy to access for inspection or replacement, and Yuantai supplies spare parts and maintenance guidance. Together, these features keep the crane running reliably and lower the chance of unexpected downtime.
