Overhead cranes play a vital role in modern industrial workshops. They allow for safe and efficient lifting, handling, and movement of heavy materials and equipment across production lines, fabrication areas, and storage zones. This case study outlines how Yuantai supplied four overhead cranes to a growing industrial workshop in Saudi Arabia.
Why the Customer Required Overhead Cranes

The customer's fabrication shop processes raw steel materials and assembles large structural components on a daily basis. These components are bulky and large and difficult to move manually. Forklifts and manual handling can no longer meet production demands and there are obvious safety hazards during lifting and transportation. The customer needed cranes that could reliably lift and move steel plates, tubes and finished parts weighing up to 5 tons, while also serving a wide operating area with multiple shop areas. Portable gantry cranes and jib cranes are not sufficient to meet the lifting requirements. Other gantry cranes require large areas of track to be laid and also take up a lot of floor space. Bridge cranes operate more stably in indoor environments and do not interfere with ground operations. Comprehensive comparison of multiple lifting options. The customer decided to go for a bridge crane.
Overhead Crane Requirements and Design Challenges Before Installation
1. Challenges with Existing Infrastructure
Before crane installation, the customer faced a major constraint: one of the existing workshop buildings was not originally designed to support overhead cranes. The walls lacked reinforced columns or beams that could carry the vertical and horizontal loads imposed by crane systems.
As a result, installing a conventional crane on runway beams anchored to the building structure was not possible. To address this, a free-standing support system with carrier beams had to be erected. This added complexity in terms of welding baseplates, painting structural columns, and aligning the rails accurately over long spans.
2. Handling Limitations with Forklifts and Mobile Lifting
If forklifts and mobile cranes are used to move heavy loads, space constraints in the shop and obstructions on the floor can affect the maneuverability and range of movement of the forklift. Forklifts also posed safety issues while working near welding stations or over painted surfaces, where exhaust fumes or spark generation was undesirable. The need for an overhead lifting solution that operated above the workspace, freeing floor space and reducing interference, became evident.
3. Installation Readiness
The customer did not have any crane runway beams in place when the overhead cranes arrived. Our engineering team was required to provide on-site support, guiding the customer on installing steel runway beams, aligning rail skid lines, and preparing the structure for crane operation.
Yuantai's Overhead Crane Supply and On-site Support

Yuantai provided a complete overhead crane solution that covered equipment supply and on-site technical support. The goal was to help you move materials safely and smoothly across different areas of the workshop.
1. Two 5-Ton Single Girder and Two Double Girder Cranes We Provided
Yuantai supplied two 5-ton single girder overhead cranes for light to medium lifting tasks. These cranes work well when you need to move steel plates or welded parts between workstations, especially in areas with limited headroom. They offer stable lifting while keeping the structure simple and cost-effective. In addition, two double girder overhead cranes were installed in the newly built section of the workshop. These cranes handle heavier loads, cover longer spans, and provide higher lifting heights, making them suitable for demanding production tasks where strength and efficiency matter.
2. Rail Skid Lines and Carrier Beam Support
To allow the cranes to travel smoothly across the full width of the workshop, Yuantai also supplied rail skid lines designed for long-term and repetitive use. The rails were paired with reliable fastening components to keep alignment stable during daily operations. End stops and buffer systems were added to improve safety and control trolley movement. These details help you maintain consistent crane performance while reducing wear on key components over time.
3. On-site Structural Support and Precision Installation
In areas where the workshop did not originally support overhead cranes, Yuantai engineers guided the installation of carrier beams on-site. Vertical support columns were welded securely to form a strong foundation. Load-bearing cross-beams were then installed using flange joints to ensure structural stability. This careful setup allows you to operate the cranes with confidence and reduces maintenance issues caused by misalignment.

Advantages of Yuantai Overhead Cranes in the Saudi Workshop
Improved Handling Efficiency
The new crane system allowed materials to be moved directly from storage to workstations without relying on floor-based transport. Average handling time per load dropped by 40%, improving production throughput. Operators no longer needed to wait for mobile equipment, reducing downtime between welding and painting phases.
Enhanced Safety
By replacing forklifts with overhead lifting, the risk of collisions and manual lifting injuries was reduced. Load limiters and emergency stops ensured that crane usage adhered to rated capacities. Remote controls allowed operators to maintain distance from suspended loads.
Flexible Operation
Wireless remote control on all cranes allowed a single operator to maneuver materials through various process stages. Pendant controls provided backup. The cranes were designed with smooth start/stop drives to reduce swing, essential for accurate placement.
Structural Adaptability
The ability to install double girder cranes using erected carrier beams demonstrated the cranes' flexibility in non-standard buildings. Yuantai's support ensured the rail alignment and load transfer met workshop safety norms.
Durability in Harsh Environments
Saudi Arabia's ambient temperature regularly exceeds 40°C. All motors and electrical parts were selected for high ambient ratings. Corrosion-resistant paints protected structural parts from airborne dust and moisture.
Applications Beyond This Workshop
The four overhead cranes supplied to this Saudi customer are suitable not only for steel fabrication but also for a wide range of industrial applications:
1. Machinery Assembly Workshops
Cranes are used to lift engines, housings, and welded frames during multi-stage assembly. Double girder systems allow for precise equipment positioning.
2. Power Equipment Manufacturing
Manufacturers of generators and transformers benefit from high-capacity lifting during winding, casing, and final testing stages.
3. Logistics and Warehouse Facilities
Overhead cranes handle palletized loads and metal packages, reducing forklift traffic. Single girder cranes suit narrow aisles and limited roof clearance.
4. Precast Concrete Manufacturing
Formworks and concrete panels require safe movement from casting to curing to storage. Crane travel precision minimizes damage to fresh castings.
5. Heavy Equipment Maintenance Bays
Overhead cranes lift machine components for repair and reassembly. Workshop-based lifting ensures fast turnaround and reduces outsourcing.
6. Metal Coil Processing
In coil cutting and slitting plants, cranes handle incoming coil rolls and outgoing processed products, improving flow continuity.
Conclusion
Yuantai provided two 5-ton single girder cranes and two double girder cranes to a Saudi fabrication company, and despite infrastructure constraints, our technical team guided the carrier beam and rail installations. The end result was increased safety, faster operations, and workflow flexibility. The installed cranes are now an integral part of the customer's daily operations. This example shows that, with the correct supplier, overhead cranes may be utilized successfully in both new and retrofitting workshops.
