Three 2‑ton pillar-mounted jib cranes (BZ series) were delivered to a machining workshop in Kazakhstan. The facility uses large machining centers for mold loading/unloading and heavy fixture changes. Each station required exactly a 2‑ton lift capacity. The customer has multiple identical workstations, each constrained in space. They could not install an overhead bridge crane (no support structures) or rail travel. To meet their needs, we supplied three floor‑mounted pillar jib cranes, each with a 5 m boom and 5 m hook height, equipped with electric chain hoists. These cranes occupy a tiny footprint yet cover the entire workstation with a 360° swing.

Client & Project Background

The customer is engaged in the precision machining and mold making industry. Their data machining center produces metal molds and parts. The machine requires regular replacement of heavy duty molds, some of which are so heavy that it is difficult to replace them with manpower alone.

Client Needs

  • Space Constraints: There was no space for overhead cranes or trackways. The building's structure could not support a bridge crane. Therefore cranes can only be installed on the ground. In addition to this, the customer's ground has a need for metal materials and processing equipment. Therefore it is hoped that the crane will try not to take up too much floor space.
  • Cost Considerations: The customer needed to install cranes in close proximity to three pieces of equipment. Considering that the installation of bridge cranes requires the installation of steel frames and rails, this would require the remodeling of the workshop and would also cause production delays. From an economic point of view, they would prefer us to provide lifting equipment for stand-alone operation.

Lifting Solution & Crane Design

We provided three pillar-mounted jib cranes (Yuantai BZ series), each configured as follows:

  • Hoist: With durability and maintenance needs in mind, we designed our jib cranes with european chain hoists. Compared with traditional chain hoists, it pays more attention to the extreme utilization of space in its design. By highly integrating the motor, gearbox and other components, it significantly reduces its own external dimensions and the required headroom height, making it ideal for use in situations where the height of the plant is limited or where there are high requirements for the hook lifting height. This crane is capable of braking instantly in the event of a power failure, ensuring the safety of operators and equipment.
  • Structure: Freestanding steel column (Q235B) with welded boom. The column is floor-mounted via anchor bolts into a concrete base (foundation-mounted style). This ensures stability for 2t loads without requiring oversized footers.
  • Duty: Designed to ISO Class A3 duty (suitable for light-to-moderate industrial use). Each crane is expected to handle a few lifts per hour during shifts.
  • Control: Pendant push-button control (up/down for hoist, manual slewing). Operators can quickly connect the hoist hook to a mold and swing it precisely. The simple controls match the customer's preference for user-friendly operation.

A pillar jib uses only one vertical support and a horizontal arm — hence a small footprint. For each of the three cells, the jib can be mounted in a corner and still reach all necessary areas. This use-case exactly fits a pillar jib: it does not need to rely on walls or elevated tracks and frees up floor space.

Key Parameters (3× 2t BZ Jib Cranes)

Parameter Specification/Value
Crane Type Pillar-Mounted Jib Crane (BZ series)
Quantity 3 identical sets (one per station)
Lifting Capacity 2,000 kg SWL each (all with 2 t chain hoist)
Boom (Arm) Length 5.0 m (steel cantilever beam)
Rotation Range 360°
Lifting Height 5.0 m under hook
Hoist Type Electric Chain Hoist (Grade-80 load chain)
Hoist Lift Speed 0.3 m/min (fine), 3.0 m/min (fast)
Duty Class ISO/CMAA Class A3 (light duty)
Control Pendant (hoist up/down) and manual slew
Power Supply 380 V/50 Hz/3-Phase (for hoists)
Installation Freestanding on concrete foundation
Safety Devices Upper/lower limit switches, emergency stop, overload cutout (hoist)

Each crane was custom-fitted to the station's layout. For example, we ensured the boom was offset to clear nearby machinery. The column heights were identical, allowing straightforward interchangeability of parts and maintenance.

Implementation & Project Management

The project included design, fabrication, testing, delivery, and commissioning:

  • Design & Approval: We confirmed requirements with the client's maintenance engineers. The client needed quick delivery (ongoing projects). After minor tweaks (e.g. adding stops on jib ends), the design was approved.
  • Fabrication: Steel columns, booms, and baseplates were fabricated per CAD drawings. Welds were NDT-checked. The electric chain hoists were assembled with double-speed controls. All cranes share a common design for economy of scale.
  • Factory Testing (Week 6): We assembled one full crane on our test rig. The hoist was loaded to 2.5 t (125%) to verify structure and brake performance. Slewing and load stability were checked. Only after passing tests did we proceed.
  • Delivery: All crane components (legs, beams, hoists) were shipped to Kazakhstan in export crates. We provided the customer with certification documents (load test report, CE declaration, etc.) to meet their audit needs.

Our timely communication and adherence to export/import regulations smoothed the process. The client expressed appreciation for our thorough documentation and support.

Safety and Quality Assurance

Safety standards and quality control were rigorously followed:

  • Design Standards: Each jib meets ISO 4301 for cranes and CMAA specifications for jib cranes. We adhered to ISO/DIN norms for rotational jib design. The structure is per FEM Class 2m (light workshops).
  • Load Testing: A proof test was done at 125% capacity (2.5 t) per OSHA/ANSI rules. This insured each crane has a factor of safety beyond the rated 2 tons.
  • Safe Operation Features: Each hoist included upper and lower limits to prevent overwinding. The jibs have mechanical end stops at 180° to prevent over-swing (clients sometimes restrict to 180° if needed). Emergency e-stop was provided at the pendant. Crucially, the rated load is stamped on the boom end and pillar.
  • Documentation: Full documentation (test reports, user manual, maintenance schedule) was delivered. We also outlined daily checklists per EN 13157 (chain hoists) guidelines.

FAQs

Q: Why use pillar-mounted jib cranes instead of wall-mounted or overhead cranes?
A: Pillar jibs are ideal when walls or building supports are not available. A column-mounted jib only needs floor anchorage (or a base) and can provide 360° coverage. In this case, the facility lacked sufficient wall structure and had low trusses, making wall cranes or overhead cranes unworkable.

Q: Why use an electric chain hoist rather than a wire rope hoist?
A: Chain hoists are compact and provide more hook travel per frame height, which is beneficial when working close to ceiling limits. They are also simpler to maintain. In this project, the electric chain hoist (Grade 80 chain) gave a fast lift speed and durability. Many customers prefer chain hoists on jibs for their fine positioning and lower cost for the required capacity.

Q: What industries commonly use pillar jib cranes?
A: Any small-to-medium facility with localized lifting needs. Examples include metal fabrication workshops (lifting parts between machines), automotive repair bays, machine shops (like our client), welding shops, and even loading docks in warehouses. Essentially, pillar jibs suit areas where one needs a fixed lifting point but cannot install a full bridge crane.
