Design and Features of LD Single Girder Overhead Cranes

1. Design of LD Overhead Cranes

The LD single-girder bridge crane employs a welded box-section or I-beam structure in which the main girder is rigidly connected to the end girders. The main girder features a single solid web design, with an electric hoist (typically a CD1 or MD1 type wire rope hoist) suspended from the lower flange of the main girder to facilitate lifting and lateral movement along the main girder; The trolley travel mechanism drives the entire unit to move longitudinally along the workshop tracks via the drive wheels and idler wheels at both ends of the end beams.

2. Features of LD Single Girder Overhead Crane

Features Details
Simple structure Fewer components overall, lower manufacturing costs and easier maintenance.
Lightweight The main girder has a small cross-section and a relatively low dead weight (compared to double-girder cranes), resulting in low wheel pressure on the factory floor.
Generous headroom The hoist is suspended beneath the main girder, providing a greater distance (H dimension) between the hook and the track surface, making it suitable for workshops where headroom is not a constraint.
Lifting capacity range Typically ranging from 1t to 32 t, with 5 t and 10 t being the most common.
Span range 7.5m to 31.5m, standardised span series.
Lifting height 6m to 30m
Service class Mostly A3–A5, not suitable for heavy or extra-heavy duty operations.
Cost-effectiveness With low initial purchase costs, it is the top choice for small and medium-sized factories and warehousing environments in terms of value for money.

Limitations of LD Overhead Cranes

LD overhead cranes are a practical and cost-effective choice for many workshops and warehouses. They are simple in design and easy to install. However, like any equipment, they come with certain limitations.

1. Lifting Height Limitations

The hoist in an LD overhead crane is suspended below the main girder, which directly reduces the available lifting height. If your workshop has limited headroom or you need to lift loads to a higher position, this design may restrict your operations.

2. Unsuitable for Large Tonnages

LD single girder overhead cranes are typically designed for light to medium-duty lifting operations. When the load reaches 20 tons, the main girder may experience greater deflection as the load increases, which can compromise safety and operational performance. If your lifting operations frequently involve heavy equipment or large materials, a double-girder crane offers superior strength and durability.

3. Lower Working Class

LD overhead cranes are typically built for moderate working conditions rather than continuous, high-frequency use. When used in demanding environments with frequent lifting and heavy loads, their components may wear out faster, leading to a shorter service life. If your operation runs multiple shifts or requires constant lifting, you should consider whether a higher-duty crane would better support your workload and reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Main Components of LD Single Girder Overhead Cranes

1. Girder Structure in LD Single Girder Overhead Cranes

The design of the main girder directly affects the crane’s performance and durability. Main girders typically feature a welded box-type structure, which ensures strength while maintaining a relatively low overall weight. This balance is critical because a lighter crane reduces the load on the building while still meeting the required lifting capacity. High-quality steel enhances resistance to deformation and fatigue, particularly under frequent use. A well-designed girder also helps reduce vibration, making the hoisting process more stable and controllable.

2. Electric Hoist

A wire rope hoist is the standard option and works well for most medium-duty applications, offering higher lifting heights and stable performance. A chain hoist is more suitable for lighter loads and shorter lifting heights, and it is often easier to maintain. Modern hoists focus on smooth lifting, low noise, and energy efficiency, which improves the working environment and reduces operating costs.

3. End Carriages

End carriages are installed at both ends of the girder and allow the crane to travel along the runway beams. Their quality has a direct impact on how smoothly and safely the crane moves. Equipped with durable wheels and reliable motors, they help ensure steady travel without sudden stops or shaking. Good alignment and precise manufacturing reduce wheel wear and extend the service life of both the crane and the runway system.
