Indoor overhead cranes, also known as bridge cranes or EOT cranes, provide an efficient way to handle heavy loads in industries such as manufacturing and warehousing. They can precisely and safely lift and position machinery, molds, steel coils, and other payloads. In the manufacturing, automotive, warehousing, and metal processing industries, indoor bridge cranes can maximize workspace efficiency and improve workflows. Indoor overhead cranes come in a variety of configurations. Single-girder overhead cranes use a single main girder and are ideal for light- to medium-duty loads. Double-girder overhead cranes have two girders and can handle heavy loads and long spans. Workstation overhead cranes are compact systems designed for localized operations: some are supported by freestanding columns (freestanding), while others are suspended from the ceiling (suspended). Each type of crane has its own unique advantages and is suitable for different work scenarios.

Advantages of Using Indoor Overhead Cranes

Indoor overhead cranes play an important role in modern factories, warehouses, workshops, and production facilities. Unlike forklifts and other ground-based equipment, they use overhead space to move materials efficiently across the working area. This helps improve productivity, supports safer lifting operations, and makes better use of available floor space.

1. Efficient Indoor Material Handling

Indoor overhead cranes help you move heavy loads quickly and accurately within a building. The crane travels along a fixed runway system, allowing materials to be transported directly from one work area to another without unnecessary handling steps. This reduces loading and unloading time, improves workflow efficiency, and helps workers complete tasks faster. Since the crane can cover a large working area, it can serve multiple workstations and production zones, making it easier to manage materials throughout the facility. Precise controls also allow operators to position loads accurately, which is especially important when handling machinery parts, molds, steel components, and other valuable materials.

2. Reduced Floor Congestion

One of the biggest advantages of an indoor overhead crane is that it operates above the work area rather than on the factory floor. Forklifts, pallet trucks, and other material handling vehicles require travel paths and storage space, which can create congestion in busy facilities. An overhead crane eliminates much of this traffic by moving loads through unused overhead space. This creates a cleaner and more organized working environment, improves access to equipment and production lines, and reduces the risk of collisions between vehicles, materials, and workers.

3. Cost-Effective Industrial Lifting Solutions

A single overhead crane can handle a variety of lifting and transport tasks that would typically require multiple forklifts or additional manpower. Faster material handling speeds can reduce production delays and improve overall operational efficiency. Indoor overhead cranes are designed for a long service life and, with proper maintenance, can operate reliably for many years. Because they can improve production efficiency and reduce manual handling, overhead cranes are a practical and cost-effective lifting solution for many companies.

Types of Indoor Overhead Cranes

Yuantai offers a full lineup of indoor overhead crane types to match different duties and spaces. The main categories are single-girder cranes, double-girder cranes, and workstation cranes. Single-girder indoor bridge cranes (with one beam) are widely used for general lifting in workshops and light manufacturing. Double-girder overhead cranes (two beams) handle heavy-duty tasks and long spans in steel mills, large factories, and power plants. Workstation cranes come as freestanding or ceiling-mounted systems, perfect for light assembly or maintenance tasks in limited areas.

Single Girder Overhead Cranes Double Girder Overhead Cranes Workstation Overhead Cranes
Single Girder Overhead Cranes Double Girder Overhead Cranes Workstation Overhead Cranes

A single girder overhead crane has a single main girder; the hoisting mechanism and trolley typically travel along the lower flange of the single girder. This crane features a lightweight, compact design and has a lifting capacity of up to 20 metric tons, making it ideal for light- and medium-duty applications such as workshops, warehouses, and material yards.

A double-girder bridge crane consists of a bridge structure formed by two parallel main girders; the trolley and hoisting mechanism typically run along the top of the main girders. With a lifting capacity of up to several hundred metric tons, these cranes are specifically designed for high-frequency, demanding operations and are commonly found in steel mills, foundries, ports, and large manufacturing plants.

Workstation gantry cranes are compact, ergonomic lifting systems. These cranes typically feature an enclosed track design, enabling smooth and effortless movement. They come in two main configurations: freestanding models, which use their own ground support columns and can be installed almost anywhere without requiring any structural modifications to the building; and ceiling-mounted models, which attach directly to the building's roof structure, saving floor space.

Single Girder Indoor Overhead Cranes

Single-girder overhead cranes carry the load below one main beam. They are the simplest overhead crane type and are often the most economical choice for general lifting. Yuantai's single-girder cranes cover a variety of models:

1. LD Single Girder Overhead Crane

The LD series is a traditional top-running single-beam crane (capacity 1–20t) used for light to medium duty. Its box-beam girder and end trucks are simple and strong. The hoist hangs below the beam, which gives extra headroom for the load. Because the overall weight is low, these cranes impose a smaller load on the building. This design makes them easier and cheaper to install. Typical spans reach up to about 31.5m with lifting heights up to 18–30m. You can choose between wire-rope or chain hoists depending on precision and space; chain hoists often make sense for lighter jobs.

3t-ld-overhead-crane

a. Features and Advantages

LD cranes have a straightforward steel structure, which keeps maintenance easy. They suit general factory use: assembly, warehouses, and small workshops. Typical class of service is A3–A4 (light to medium duty), which covers most routine tasks. The hook range of motion is high because the hoist is under the beam, maximizing usable height. An LD crane is a good fit if you need to lift loads up to around 20t regularly without heavy-duty cycles.

b. Electric Hoist Configuration

By default, a wire rope hoist is used for most LD cranes, giving higher lifting speeds and longer life for medium loads. However, Yuantai can also equip LD cranes with electric chain hoists (e.g. with two-speed control) if your lifting height is low or if you prefer a cheaper option. We specify the hoist (CD/MD series) to match your capacity, lift height, and cycle rate. Both hoist types provide precise load control and reliable performance in workshop environments.

2. HD European Single Girder Overhead Crane

Our HD series is a refined single-girder crane that meets DIN, FEM, and ISO standards. It is designed with optimized box girders and a lightweight trolley, which reduces the dead weight of the crane. HD cranes also use advanced frequency-driven controls (inverters) for smooth starting and positioning, making them suitable for precise handling. Typical lifting speed is higher, and the whole bridge is narrower, which can maximize your workspace. In operation, the HD overhead crane runs quietly with low vibration, which extends the life of components. With capacities usually up to 20t, HD bridge cranes are a popular choice for moderate loads where smooth control and higher duty (A5) are required.

yt-10-ton-single-girder-overhead-crane

a. Design and Features

The HD overhead crane uses a low-hoist profile and a welded steel structure. Compared to LD model, it gives a higher load hook reach for the same building clearance. It also often has dual hoist speeds for fast lift and slow precision, which improves efficiency.

b. Low Maintenance and Energy Efficiency

Because HD bridge cranes are lighter, they require less power to move. When used with modern variable-frequency drives, power consumption is lower. Less vibration also means less wear on the gears and brakes, resulting in a longer service life. In summary, HD cranes are designed to have low maintenance costs over the long term.

3. LDP Low Headroom Overhead Crane

The LDP bridge crane features a single-girder design and is suitable for locations with very limited headroom. What makes it unique is that the hoist trolley is mounted on the side of the beam rather than underneath it. This design increases the hook's lifting height, thereby providing additional lifting capacity. It has the same simple structure as a standard LD crane, but its layout—with the hoisting mechanism located on the side of the beam—makes it an ideal choice for locations with limited space.

install-overhead-crane-in-space-constrained-area

a. Offset Hoist Design

The hoist on the LDP overhead crane is located on the side of the main girder, providing a greater lifting height compared to the LD model. This design is particularly practical in older factory buildings or low-ceilinged garages. If your building has height restrictions but you want to maximize the lifting height without modifying the structure, you can use an LDP overhead crane.

b. Applications

Use an LDP crane in paint shops, small machine shops, or any workshop where headroom is tight. It works for the same loads as the LD model (typically up to 20t), but fits into spaces where a normal crane would be too tall.

c. Advantages

LDP bridge cranes offer greater lifting heights for the same building height, which helps improve production efficiency: there is no need to repeatedly adjust the boom or perform additional lifting operations, thereby avoiding the hassles caused by insufficient crane height.

4. LX Suspension Overhead Crane

The LX (also called underhung or ceiling-suspended crane) is a single-girder bridge that hangs from the building's roof structure. It has no need for support columns or runway beams along the walls. The entire crane (bridge and trolley) is mounted on a rail attached under the ceiling. This makes the LX crane highly space-efficient – all of the building's floor area remains free, and it's perfect where headroom is extremely limited.

yuantai-3t-underslung-cranes

a. Design of LX Suspension Overhead Crane

LX suspension overhead cranes use I-beams or channel beams as their main girders, and the wheels run on fixed overhead tracks. The electric hoist is suspended below. LX cranes typically have a rated lifting capacity of up to 10 metric tons. Because the bridge and trolley roll along the upper track, the hook can be positioned very close to the ceiling, thereby making full use of the available headroom.

b. Advantages of LX Suspension Overhead Crane

The LX Suspension Overhead Crane, also known as an underslung overhead crane or under-running bridge crane, offers several advantages for workshops and facilities where floor space and building height are limited. This design is especially useful in small workshops, warehouses, maintenance facilities, and light manufacturing plants. The compact structure allows the crane to make better use of the building space and reach areas that may be difficult for traditional overhead cranes to access. Their lighter self-weight places less load on the building structure, which can reduce construction costs for new facilities. Installation is often faster and more economical because the crane can be suspended directly from the roof structure or existing steel framework.

c. Applications

LX suspended overhead cranes are widely used in industries that require efficient material handling but do not need heavy-duty lifting equipment. It is commonly found in machine shops, equipment assembly plants, warehouses, maintenance departments, automotive parts factories, and light industrial production lines. This overhead crane can load, unload, and transport materials between different areas while keeping the floor clear for pedestrian traffic. Because the LX under-suspension crane can be installed beneath existing roof structures, it is ideal for older buildings that cannot support heavy overhead crane systems.

5. LB Explosion-Proof Overhead Crane

Yuantai's LB series are single-girder cranes built for hazardous environments. They comply with explosion-protection standards (such as ATEX or IECEx) by using fully enclosed and grounded electrical components. The control cabinet, motor, hoist, and trolley must all have explosion-proof (Ex-proof) construction. This typically means flameproof enclosures and spark-avoiding gearing. LB cranes often have features like flame-throw dampers and special ventilation to prevent any ignition in dusty or flammable-gas atmospheres.

lb-explosion-proof-overhead-crane

a. Explosion Protection Standards

In practice, an LB crane might be used in a chemical plant or petroleum refinery where gases or dust can explode. All exposed parts are rated Ex-d or Ex-e. Limit switches, pendant controls, and even lighting must also be explosion-proof. Yuantai engineers select certified hoists and switches to meet your local requirements.

b. Suitable Hazardous Area Applications

LB cranes are ideal for indoor operations that handle flammable liquids, gases, or combustible dusts. This includes paint factories, pharmaceutical manufacturing, fuel terminals, and certain food processing plants. By using an explosion-proof crane, you ensure that lifting operations do not introduce sparks or heat into the environment.

6. LDY Metallurgical Overhead Crane

The LDY is a special single-girder crane designed for foundries, steel mills, and aluminum plants – anywhere you lift molten metal or castings. These cranes have heavy-duty construction and heat-resistant components. The main beam's bottom flange is insulated to shield it from heat radiation and to prevent thermal distortion. The hoist system uses high-temperature wire rope and motors rated for hot conditions.

ldy-metallurgical-overhead-crane

a. Molten Metal Handling Requirements

In a steel plant, molten ladles or ingots might be hundreds of degrees. An ordinary crane would quickly fail under these temperatures. The LDY crane's girder can withstand radiated heat without losing strength. It also has heavy safety measures: dual brakes on the hoist and trolley, mechanical locking devices, and upper/lower travel limits to prevent overshoots.

b. Heat Resistant Components and Safety

For example, Yuantai's LDY hoist uses special motor insulation, heat-resistant wheels, and ceramic bearings where needed. The control box can be heated or forced-air cooled. Every crane is tested in a heat chamber. In practice, these cranes operate reliably in high-heat areas.

Double Girder Indoor Overhead Cranes

When lifting requirements exceed the load capacity of a single-girder crane, a double-girder bridge crane can be used. Double-girder overhead cranes are specifically designed for heavy-duty, high-load-capacity applications. Yuantai's double-girder bridge cranes can handle loads ranging from 5 metric tons to over 500 metric tons and are commonly used in the steel production, power generation, automotive, and heavy machinery manufacturing industries. Yuantai offers a wide range of double-girder bridge cranes in various configurations.

a-qd-double-girder-overhead-crane

1. QD Double Girder Overhead Crane

The Yuanta QD type double girder bridge crane is equipped with a winch trolley and has a standard design lifting height of approximately 32 meters and a span of approximately 36 meters. For example, a QD-type crane can safely lift a 100-metric-ton load at a height of 22 meters and a span of 30 meters.

a. Features of QD Overhead Cranes

The QD crane's structure is sturdy. Two main beams carry the hoist on a trolley, and large end carriages support the bridge. Modern controls allow you to operate the bridge, trolley, and hoist independently. Options include cabin control for a driver with full visibility or radio/pendant for remote operation. Key features include high load capacity, rugged steel construction, and stable operation over long runs. These cranes are often specified in class A5/A6 duty.

b. Hoist and Trolley Configurations

A QD crane can use different hoist setups. The standard is a wire-rope hoist on a trolley, which is fixed onto the girders. This allows hoist capacities from a few tons up to hundreds, depending on gearing. We can also supply optional low-headroom rope hoists if vertical clearance is tight. For very heavy lifts, customers sometimes choose two-speed or tandem hoists for finer control and faster lifting. Trolleys are rugged for continuous duty and can be equipped with frequency converters for smooth travel speeds.

2. QDX European Double Girder Overhead Crane

The QDX series is our European-style double-girder crane. It's similar to QD in function but optimized in design. The main girders are made with welded box sections of high-grade steel, giving a lighter dead weight but high strength.

bridge-cranes-for-outdoor-application

a. Hoist and Trolley Configurations

The QDX uses wire-rope hoists, but often with a low-headroom type fitted. This means the hook can rise very close to the girders for extra hook height. We also offer double-speed hoists and heavier duty trolleys on QDX models to match the higher lifting classes (up to A6). The cranes support capacities up to ~200t in standard configuration.

b. Design

The QDX features advanced aspects: optimized box girders, frequency-driven controls for smoother motion, and reduced hook approach distance. They run with very low vibration, which keeps noise down and wear on parts minimal. For your facility, a QDX crane offers the benefit of precision lifting in heavy-duty work, with the headroom advantage of its low-hoist setup.

3. LH Double Girder Overhead Crane

The LH series is a double-girder crane that typically uses built-up electric hoists (CD/MD type). It's a common choice for capacities from about 5 to 50t. Like QD, an LH crane spans on top of runway beams. Its structure is heavy-duty but often simpler than QDX. An LH crane is reliable and straightforward, with a strong steel box girder and high-travel speeds.

lh-double-girder-overhead-cranes

a. Electric Hoist and Trolley

The LH uses a standard MD1 wire rope hoist on a double-rail trolley. This allows carrying high loads. For instance, an LH crane might use a 50t MD hoist on a wide trolley for 50 t capacity. The control modes are similar (cab/pendant/remote). Many customers use LH cranes in warehouses and medium factories where a balance of cost and capacity is needed.

b. Advantages of LH Overhead Cranes

LH cranes are often the economical choice when you need double-girder performance but a simpler configuration is acceptable. They are heavy enough for frequent use (duty A5 or so) and have a proven history. If your materials aren't extremely heavy but require continuous handling, an LH overhead crane gives robust performance without the higher cost of a QDX system.

4. QE Double Trolley Overhead Crane

The QE double-trolley crane is designed for lifting long or multiple loads simultaneously. It carries two independent trolleys on the bridge.

qe-model-double-trolley-double-girder-overhead-crane

a. Applications Requiring Dual Hoist Systems

This crane is ideal for steel mills, coil yards, and machine assembly shops. If you handle lengthy items like pipes, bar stock, or large fixtures, one QE crane can do the job of two single-hoist cranes. Yuantai's QE cranes come in 5–200 t sizes.

b. Design Features

Each trolley on a QE overhead crane can move and lift independently. You can synchronize them or operate them separately, which adds flexibility. The bridge itself is heavier to accommodate two hoists.

5. QZ Grab Bucket Overhead Crane

For bulk material handling, Yuantai offers grab overhead cranes. These are double-girder cranes equipped with a clamshell or orange-peel grab bucket.

qz-double-girder-overhead-crane-yt

a. Features of Grab Bucket Overhead Cranes

The QZ grab bridge crane is equipped with a grab; once activated, the grab's jaws open or close to pick up bulk materials such as coal, sand, scrap metal, or grain. These systems are designed specifically for heavy-duty operations and coarse materials.

b. Applications

These cranes are commonly found in steel mills, power plants, waste handling, ports, and recycling centers. Anywhere large amounts of material need to be moved in bulk, a grab crane shines. For example, loading scrap metal into furnaces or unloading raw materials from silos. Yuantai offers both single and double-girder grab cranes, but the double (QZ) version can handle more capacity.

c. Adaptability

Grab cranes can operate indoors or outdoors (often with weather covers). Our QZ cranes can have either clamshell grabs or orange-peel grabs, depending on material. They are built with heavy-duty bridges and specialized winch trolleys. In practice, a QZ crane lifts tons of material in one go, improving throughput.

6. QB Explosion-Proof Double Girder Overhead Crane

The QB Explosion-Proof Overhead Crane is a double-girder crane designed for hazardous areas with flammable gases or dust, using flameproof enclosures and non-sparking mechanical parts to prevent ignition. It meets GB3836.2 and JB/T5897 standards with Exd IIBT4/IICT4 certifications, suiting Zone 1 and 2 environments. With capacities from 5 to 75 tons and spans up to 31.5 meters, it reliably serves chemical, oil, and pharmaceutical facilities. By containing internal blasts and controlling surface temperatures, this crane ensures worker safety and asset protection in volatile settings.

double-girder-explosion-proof-overhead-crane

a. Chemical Plant and Petrochemical Applications

QB double-girder overhead cranes are commonly used in industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, and mining. For example, indoor overhead cranes in refineries must be capable of lifting pipe racks and vessels while withstanding exposure to flammable gases. QB cranes are capable of lifting valves and oil drums in such environments.

Single Girder vs Double Girder Overhead Crane

Feature Single Girder Crane Double Girder Crane
Lifting Capacity Typically up to ~20–25t From ~5t up to several hundred tonnes; ideal for loads >20t
Bridge Structure One main beam (girder) Two main beams for greater strength
Hoist Placement Hoist below the beam Hoist may sit on top of beams; two hoists possible
Span Range Spans up to ~30m Spans commonly up to ~35–40m or more
Cost Lower initial and installation cost Higher cost (double beams, heavier structure)
Maintenance Simpler (less parts, fewer wheels) More components to inspect (extra wheels, motors)

The choice between single-girder and double-girder indoor overhead cranes depends on your lifting needs. If you frequently lift loads weighing 15–20 metric tons or more, or if you need a very long span, a double-girder design is usually required.

Workstation Overhead Cranes

Workstation cranes are compact, cell-based overhead cranes for light-duty tasks. Unlike full-plant cranes, they cover only a localized area such as an assembly bench or machine cell. Yuantai offers freestanding workstation cranes and ceiling-mounted workstation cranes.

1. Freestanding Workstation Overhead Cranes

A freestanding workstation crane includes its own support columns and runway. It does not need any building structure (no roof beams). This means you can install it anywhere in your shop – simply anchor its columns to the floor. Yuantai's freestanding cranes are modular kits that cover one or more bays.

a. KBK Crane System Design

The typical design uses a high-strength steel frame. Often we use an enclosed-track system (similar to KBK cranes) for the bridge: the rails carry the trolley and hoist in a compact, ergonomic way. Because the electrical conductors can be hidden inside the track, the system is neat and safe.

b. Advantages of Free-Standing Cranes

The big plus is flexibility. You don't need to modify your building – no runway girders or roof supports are required. Installation is fast: columns are bolted to the floor (usually a simple concrete slab) and then beams and rails are assembled. If your production layout changes, the crane can be taken down and moved to a new spot. A free-standing cell can often be installed over one to two days, whereas a fixed crane might take weeks of construction.

c. Applications

Freestanding cranes are ideal in assembly lines, maintenance cells, or small manufacturing areas. For example, automotive manufacturers may use a freestanding workstation crane to position engines or chassis parts. Machine shops often place a small freestanding crane over a single lathe or press to lift tooling. Warehouses and logistics centers sometimes add a free-standing span in front of loading doors for easy loading.

d. Installation and Mobility

Freestanding bridge cranes feature a modular design, with each module consisting of two columns, a girder, and an end girder. Multiple units can be connected end-to-end to form a longer lifting system. Once the ground anchors are in place, simply secure the posts with bolts and attach the crossbeams. This creates a sturdy freestanding crane. If you need to move it in the future, simply remove the posts and you can easily install it on a new concrete foundation.

2. Ceiling-Mounted Workstation Cranes

A ceiling-mounted workstation crane (also called an underhung crane) attaches its track directly to the building's roof or ceiling beams. It has no support columns on the floor, leaving your workspace completely open.

a. Structure

Overhead workstation cranes typically consist of the following components: a suspended track mounted on the roof trusses, a single-girder bridge running on end beams, and a trolley-type hoist that moves laterally beneath the bridge. It uses rails, brackets, and threaded rods to secure all the overhead components and supplies power via cable reels or guide wires. Its modular, bolted-together design allows for quick installation, adapts to changes, and keeps the floor tidy—making it ideal for assembly lines and workshops with limited space.

b. Applications

These cranes excel in shops with high ceilings but limited floor space, such as repair bays, electronics assembly, or clean manufacturing. In an auto repair garage, a ceiling crane can reach every corner without pillars. In a lab or cleanroom, it avoids introducing obstacles. They are also used in machine cells alongside other equipment. Yuantai's ceiling cranes typically handle up to 5–10t, covering spans of 3–15m (custom spans available).

3. Workstation Crane vs Overhead Crane

Feature Freestanding/Underhung Workstation Crane Full Overhead Crane (Bridge Crane)
